Public Safety

The following excerpts from a San Marino Tribune article demonstrates the level of care of the City of San Marino's public safety officials and the caring community that they represent.

Fire Chief John Penido Announces Retirement: Served Fifteen Years
Chief John Penido, a fixture in the San Marino Fire Department and in safety organizations throughout Southern California since he took the oath of office (as San Marino’ Fire Chief) in 1995, announced to The Tribune (March 17, 2010) that he will retire effective June 30, 2010.
Average career for a fire chief is about five years.  “One of the reasons I have stayed so long is that I have been overwhelmed by the support of the City Council and the community,” Penido said.  “Nowhere else in America is public safety more important.  Nowhere else does a community care so much about the people who protect them.”  Penido said he is most proud “of the culture of excellence that exists at the San Marino Fire Department.  The firefighters absolutely do everything they can to provide the best care and they do it compassionately.
